Here at Ebb and Flow Jungalows we get a lot of questions relating to the weather in South Sri Lanka, the Surf in South Sri Lanka and the best time to visit – so we have put together a bit of info to help you decide when to take your holiday. We hope it helps! Let us know if you have any questions by contacting us here
- This lonely planet link gives you an idea of the weather in different areas of the country and it will give you a good overview
In the South/West Sri Lanka (we are based in the little surf village Midigama) the best season for surf and weather typically runs from November through to April. During May – October the best place for surf and all day sunshine is typically the East coast, Arugam Bay (for surf) and further north for snorkeling and diving. For the top surf spots in Aragum Bay check out this FB post that gives a great clear outline of these!
CAUTION! – Looking at those daily weather apps you might be mislead. May 2015 Midigama had a week full sun and little more than a 15 min downpour in the evening and i showed rain ALL DAY, clouds and rain.
- When it comes to surf in the off season do check out our blog post on surfing in the “off season” so you are more informed on what to expect. There are great conditions in the south (Weligama) for learning to surf or long boarding and a surf spot just out of Midigama.
- In a nutshell “out of season” in the south means that there is more wind, and therefore the sea is not as smooth or clear – so not ideal for snorkeling, diving or whale watching.
- Its sort of the luck of the draw when it comes to the South – Ebb & Flow Jungalows had guests during the end of July/August for 2 weeks last July/August and they had only 3 days of rain! We also had guests over the Christmas break (the best time for weather) and it rained for a week! Its like any tropical country, it can be a little unpredictable.
HEADS UP! the rates in the off season can be much cheaper for the South – sometimes 50% cheaper, and of course less touristy crowds. The Jungalows have some great specials during May – October, check them out here
One option for a longer stay and want to ensure great weather would be to also visit the East/North (as it is the opposite season there). When it is likely to rain the south west it is dry in the north east. Aragum Bay and Trincomalee as well as Passikudah. Aragum Bay is only accessible by car but there are flights to Trincomalee and Passikudah.
